Last Sunday night in Tasmania while watching Australian 60 Minutes and eating a
Duffy’s Kangaroo burger (I know but when in Tassi…) I finally found out what Islamic
extremists scream as they shoot at Americans in the Mountains of Tora Bora. In a
surprising expression of respect for Greek deserts and a longing for honey, extremists
can be heard yelling, “I loooooooove Baklava!” while engaging in battle. For years I
thought I was hearing, Allahu Akbar or “God is Great”, but I was so wrong. My good
mate, Arron pointed out quite obviously they are simply expressing their admiration for
the classic Greek desert.
I am so proud of our American soldiers and our government for pulling off the killing of
Bin Laden and capturing all that data from his compound. It’s a brief moment of glory
and unity for Americans, but I feel like the world just changed. I hope it has! I’ve been
compelled to watch The Daily Show and the Colbert Report the last few nights, trying to
soak up the moment and feel as much a part of the glory as possible.
I spent most of Passover and another couple of days hiking the national parks of
Tasmania screaming “I love Baklava” at every discrete chance I got. Oh, I couldn’t stop!
And that was before Osama received a bullet hole in his eye. I went on the trip with two
of my best Melbourne mates, Arron and Raph, who’ve been friends since grade school.
It’s been so nice to be a part of an old group of friends again (I miss my HS and Emory
days…).
Tasmania looks similar to New Zealand. NZ still has the top spot, but I’ll let you decide
for yourself. Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay were my favorite sights. It was
a relaxing week away. I feel like I took a vacation from my vacation. These are some
wonderful times…
To all the Mothers out there…Happy Mother’s Day!!!
To Momma Bear, I love you.
